MIDTERM #1

For instructions please see original posting.

I have learned a great deal in the class

I am amazed about how much I have learned in this class such a small amount of time. I now know how to use Gimp, take pictures with the computer (snapshots and screenshots), improve a photo (fix red eyes and wrinkles), enter captions, work with layers and animation, save pictures and draw by using a computer, in this case with Word 2007. I am thrilled to learn the next skills. I am looking forward on creating stories using animations and uploading them to my youtube channel. I think this class will be a very helpful beginning on such journey.

Extra credit exercise JPEG version

I think in this one the colors are a bit brighter than in the PNG one. Either one is a good choice. Gif would not have been a good option since this photo has so many different colors.

Extra Credit Exercise

I first saved the image as a .tiff. I then opened it in Gimpshop, cropped it, played with the brightness and contrast option until I found a nice balance so as it not to look dark which was a problem in the original version. I scaled the image and aggradized it so as to have a better view of the swanboats. Finally I used the rectangle and text tools to add the text and saved it as a PNG.

Whiteboard Screenshot 1 (name)

My name is at the top left highlited with yellow.

Midterm #5 Progressive JPEG

When I saved this image as JPEG using GIMP, a quality control dialog box popped up. I then played with the quality levels taking into consideration the issue of file size and chose 92. I then clicked on Advanced Options where I checked the progressive checkbox and wrote "Created by Claudia Perez" on the comment space.

Midterm #10

In my drawing one can see two children, each holding a balloon and ready to start playing hopscotch. For this midterm I used several shapes including the rectangle, the triangle, the trapezoid, and the elliptical. I also utilized the straight line and the arc (curved line) a great deal as is noticeable in the foliage part of the tree, the grass under the tree, the tree branches, the cat's mouth and whiskers, the kids' noses and mouths, the flower's stem and the numbers. The hardest thing to draw were the cat and the children's hands. I also used "explosion #1" from the stars and banners section for the flower. I used the format autoshape for the color (fill and line color), sizes (height and width) and angle rotations. The green rotation tool that appears upon right clicking each shape was also very useful, as were the arrows of expansion and contraction of figures that also come up upon rigth clicking shapes and then left clicking. I figured out as well that I could make lines longer or shorter by left clicking on them and then using the small green circle that appears on each end to stretch the line as needed. Concerning arcs (the curved line), the yellow spots that appeared upon right clicking on the arc was also very important in order to manage how open or closed I needed the arc to be and in order to extend or shorten its length. I also used a beige woody texture and a brick pattern for the lower part of the house and for the roof. I must add I used also the moon (for the cat's tail), the heart (for the design in the girl's balloon), and the star (for the design in the boy's balloon). Using the straight line, the arc and the elliptical, I wrote my name. I then zoomed the image to 75% (otherwise it would not have been totally visible in the screenshot), I pressed the printscreen key and the screenshot was shot through the Picasa 3 program under which also saved the screenshot. Two last steps were uploading the original Word document to my Boston College MyFiles section and uploading the screenshot to my blog.

Midterm # 9

This midterm consists of the course diagram. The program I used for this midterm is Microsoft Word 97. I used the double wave for the class title. Not only did I fill it with a nice tone of blue but I used the gradient for giving it a more sophisticated look. I then did an interconnected double direction flow chart by using the double arrows (which I painted in different colors through the line color option in the autoformat) and different basic shapes (rectangle, elliptical, pentagon and hexagon). By way of the autoformat color fill option, I filled them with different colors and I put borders of different colors around each by using the autoformat color line option. I also included text descriptions of the class content inside each shape by clicking and writing. I used different colors for the letters using the font color tool. For the letters in the two uppermost shapes, I used Times New Roman 12 size and for the rest I used Calibri 12. For the double flag with the title and my name I used Andalus 24 and Andalus 20 fonts respectively. Finally I took a screenshot by first zooming the image to 75% (otherwise it would not come out complete in the screenshot), pressing the printscreen key on the keyboard and then saving the screenshot in Picasa 3. I then uploaded the screenshot to the blog. I also uploaded my original Word version to my Boston College MyFiles.

Midterm #8

The original image is a very wrinkled one. I used the healing, the smudge and the blur tools to do the retouching process. I worked on the areas around the eyes, between the eyebrows, the chin, the expression lines in the cheeks, and even a bit on the neck and on a slightly wrinkled spot in the visible ear. I also corrected the mark on one of the front teeth, this by using the smudge tool.

Midterm #7 (original picture)

This is the original picture.

Midterm#7

Her name is Daniela Romo and she is a very famous singer and actress in the Latin American and Spanish world. She has been around since the early 70's and is considered a great star for her beautiful voice and her incredible acting talent. After going through the instructions several times and much brainstorming and trial and error this is how I finally did it. The first step to do this midterm was to save the mantoid and the picture. Then I opened each on Gimpshop. Using the elliptical tool I surrounded the mantoid circle (only the circle part) and clicked on copy. Then I surrounded each eye with the elliptical tool (I worked on one eye at a time) and clicked on paste. I then looked for "scale layer" under "layer" and clicked on it. A box appereared that allowed me to reduce the size of the mantoid circle as necessary to be congruent with the size of the eye. I then repeated the process with the other eye and clicked save.

Midterm #4 final version

This is another version of midterm #4 with a 100 level quality. The one I first posted some time ago had an 88 level quality. I think this one looks even better. I am not sure which one to choose for the version I will submitt.

Midterm 6- Animated Gif

This midterm was a bit confusing to understand at first but I finally sorted it out. First I went to file, create, and logos and then chose text circle. A dialog box appeared and I wrote the text that would eventually go round and round comprising the image. I then clicked ok. After seeing the image automatically appear on the screen. The next step was to go to windows and click first on dockable layers and then on layers. I then added the text to the clipboard, highlighted the text circle layer from the layers menu and then selected edit copy to copy the text circle to the clipboard. *Next I selected layer, new layer from the image menu. Within the dialog box that popped out I named the layer "Layer 1", checked the "white" radio button under "layer fill type" and clicked ok. I then went to the edit menu and clicked paste. The next step was to use the rotate tool from the toolbar to click on the text on the image. This after having made sure that the pasted layer was highlighted on the layers menu. Upon seeing the "rotation information" dialog come out, I increased the angle to 45 degrees and clicked rotate. I then used the anchor icon from the bottom of the layers menu to anchor the floating layer. I then repeated the steps from the star * on three times adding 5 degrees each time. Before deciding for adding 5 degrees each time, I tried different options of degrees adding. I found this one to make the animated image very readable compared to other larger degrees additions. Finally I saved the animated gif saving it as an animation under the export file dialog box, checking the "loop forever" box and increasing the delay betweeen frames to 499 milliseconds (500 milliseconds would not appear and this was the closest number).

MIDTERM 5 PNG Interlacing

I saved the image as a PNG using GIMP by choosing PNG under the select file type box. A dialog box appeared and I checked on Interlacing Adam 7. I then played with the different compression levels until choosing level 9 and clicked save.

Midterm # 6- Understanding and using layers

This midterm was by far one of the hardest for me to complete and pretty time consuming. For completing it I carried out the following process. First I selected file and new from the GIMP menu in order to create a blank new image. As a "Create new image" dialog box appeared, I selected "Transparency" from the "fill with" drop menu and clicked ok. A next step was to add the text by adding a text box to the image and inserting some text. I then added a new layer to the image by selecting New Layer from the Layer menu. As a new layer dialog box appeared, I selected the "white" radio bottom under "layer fill type". After that I adjusted the opacity of the white layer so that the layers below it showed through. I then downloaded the Tux image and opened in GIMP and copied the image to the clipboard by selecting edit and copy from the image menu. Next, I added a new layer by selecting layer and new layer, giving the layer the name "Tux" and selecting transparency. After that, I pasted the penguin into this new layer by selecting edit and paste into. I then anchored the penguin image to the layer named "Tux" using the anchor icon in the Layers menu. The next step was to move the Tux layer down in the stacks so that it appears to be behind the text using the down arrow in the layers menu. I then deleted the semi opaque layer using the trash icon on the layer menu. Finally I saved the image as a PNG file and uploaded it to the blog.

MIDTERM #3 final version

This is the gif version. In this and the other sphere images I wrote my name so as for it not to obstruct the clear vision of any relevant objects contained within the pictures. That is the reason why in this one the name and lastname are kind of far from each other. As part of the process of saving the ball as a GIF by way of GIMP, a dialog box popped up and I clicked select file by extension. I then selected GIF image format. A next step was to click export. Another dialog box popped up and I clicked ok.

MIDTERM #3 final version

This is the PNG final version. When I saved the ball under PNG through GIMP a dialog box popped up and I clicked select file type by extension. I scrolled down and selected PNG and clicked safe. A dialog box appeared and I then made the best possible choice of compression level.

MIDTERM #3 final version

This is the JPEG final version. A first step was to download and save Ball.tif. I then opened the image in GIMP and saved it as a JPEG. When a dialog box popped up I clicked on select file type by extension. I then selected JPEG. Another box popped up and I selected advanced options. I then chose the quality of the image.
